Hello Members of District 15 Toastmasters,
First let me extend a warm welcome to our newest members who have joined Toastmasters in the last month. You are truly beginning a fantastic experience of personal growth. Always remember that all of us in Toastmasters leadership are dedicated to helping you to build self-confidence, to become better speakers, and to grow into the best leader you can become.

This months mailing , fellow Toastmasters, is focused on the Spring 2010 District Conference, May 14-15 at the Holiday Inn, Boise Idaho. We are attracting members from all over Idaho, Utah, Nevada and even from other districts in Washington and Georgia. I can say with absolute confidence that this is going to be one of the best conferences we have ever had. You certainly will want to be in Boise for this one. Aside from wonderful speakers, educational presenters and incredible contests, we will be recognizing quite a lot of educational accomplishments, club growth achievements, and folks who have gone above all expectations to inspire us all with their leadership. At this point, I have bout about $700 in give-away prizes and that number just keeps climbing. We are giving away prizes to individuals and clubs for:
* Submitting the most Competent Communicator Awards in a three month period
* Submitting the most Competent Leadership Awards in a three month period
* Adding the most new members since July 2009
* Having the most Conference First-Timers in attendance
* Being a Conference First-Timer in attendance
* And even more reasons to give prizes...

Don't forget also that we're asking clubs to donate gift baskets that can be auctioned off as a way of defraying the cost of a Conference. In the past, Conference attendees have taken home hundreds of dollars in gift basket merchandise for as low as a $20 winning bid. You can get more information about submitting a club basket at http://conference.district15speaks.org/Conference2010Baskets.pdf.

Of course, let me also pass on the crazy-low price for the Conference Registration. You can register at http://conference.district15speaks.org/ and select the Full Conference Registration for $89. Alternatively, you can select only the portions that interest you at the ala carte price. However, considering the $40 savings of $89 over $129 you would pay if you selected each option ala carte, the Full Conference Package is by far the best deal around. For payment we will accept a check mailed to our Registration Chair, Evelyn Peterson, or via PayPal.

I look forward to meeting and chatting with each and every one of you at the Spring 2010 Conference, so register today and plan to have a great time, make new friendships, enhance your speaking skills and win some prizes.

Cheers.

Hello District 15 Toastmasters,
Let me first apologize for sending two mass emails one day apart, but an urgent matter has arisen and this is the most efficient manner of getting word out to the district.

You may have received an email earlier today from Billie Jones explaining that she was in a conference in England and needed money to cover some travel costs. Billie is not in England and sent no such email. Evidently Billie's email account at Hotmail was hacked and someone is sending this email to everyone on her contact list in the hopes of duping someone into sending money. Please delete the email asking for money.

Billie is working on regaining control of her email account.

Again, I apologize for sending the extra mail blast but as Billie has quite an extensive contact list (she has helped and worked with quite an extraordinary number of toastmasters over the years) this was the best way to undo the damage caused by the hacker.

Hello Fellow District 15 Toastmasters,
As we recover from the holidays, hopefully your resolutions are still intact. We have wrapped up the first rounds of our Winter TLIs, and will focus on finishing officer training through the month of February. You should also finish your club speech contests during this month.

As an incentive for submitting educational awards, I will give away some prizes at the Spring Conference. During the months of January March, I am looking for the clubs that submit the most Competent Communicator and Advanced Communicator awards. To the clubs with the most submissions of each, I will give a $100 TI store gift certificate. If we have tied clubs we will resolve them through a random drawing. I also intend to give similar certificates to area governors who have the most Competent Communicator and Advanced Communicator awards submitted in their area.

The Spring 2010 Conference is officially open for registration. You may register online at http://conference.district15speaks.org/ to reserve your spot in Boise on May 14-15. We have an exciting line-up of top-notch speakers, great contests, and fantastic educational sessions. The early-bird special (all meals, contests, and educational sessions included) will run at $89 until March 15th. Additionally, the Boise Airport Holiday Inn is running a District 15 Toastmasters discount rate of $69 per night for the Spring Conference. You won't want to miss this one, Fellow Toastmasters.

Nominations for the District Offices (2010-2011) are open. You may read the position descriptions and submit your nominations at http://officers.district15speaks.org/nominations.php.

From the desk of our LGET, Peggy Carr, DTM:
Believe it or not, fellow Toastmasters, it is time to start making plans for Spring Conference to be held May 14-15 at the Holiday Inn, Boise. Conference Chair Deborah Whitman and her committee are doing a wonderful job to make sure this is the best conference ever. They have lined up wonderful keynote speakers to entertain and to educate us. The meal selections are great. Registration and conference information are on the District 15 web site; check it out.

However, before we can attend Spring Conference there are a number of things we still need to do:

1.Club, Area, and Division Contests. The areas of competition for Spring are the International Speech Contest and the Tall Tales Contests. In order to compete in either of these contests, you must be a member in good standing of a club in good standing. Also, to be eligible to compete in the International Speech contest you must have completed at least six speeches at the time of your club's contest or be a charter member of a club that has chartered since July 1, 2009. There are certain restrictions on who can compete in a contest: if you are a candidate for a District Office or you are planning on making an educational presentation at the Spring Conference, you are ineligible. Detailed information can be found in the Speech Contest Rule Book which your club president has received or is available on the Toastmasters' web site.
2.Submit nominations for District 15's Hall of Fame and the Giant of the District. Do you know a Toastmaster who has consistently gone above and beyond what is required of them? If so, submit a nomination to Awards Chair Susan Baer (baer.susan@gmail.com). The deadline for nominating someone for the Hall of Fame or Giant of the District is April 15. All that is required is a narrative stating why you feel this person deserves the award.
3.Complete your education and/or leadership goals and submit the award application to Toastmasters International; if you complete three education and/or leadership awards during the Toastmaster year, you will be eligible to receive District 15's Triple Crown award at the Spring Conference.
4.Oh, and by the way, complete and record your club's officer training for the second half of the year if you have not already done so.
5.Have a great rest of the Toastmaster year.

Peggy Carr, DTM
Lt. Governor, Education and Training
Building Leadership, One Success at a Time

From the desk of our LGM, Emmy Jones, DTM:
We all know if you keep doing the same things you have always done, you will get the same results.
Let us work on getting better results by doing more to build our membership.

We have heard a lot about CHANGE in the past months.

Let us make the word CHANGE work for us as Toastmasters:

Challenge all members to "Talk up Toastmasters" this contest runs from Feb through March a good way to build membership.
Have fun we all learn better and quicker when we are in a fun environment.
Advertise your clubs. Arrange good quality meetings in the club, area and Division. Quality meetings attract good members.
News about your club, area or Division. Tell us who the winners of your contests are. Have you put your clubs in your local papers?
Goals get all clubs to work on their DCP, get their education awards sent in as soon as they are completed.
Encourage all members to attend District Conference it's the place to be.

Lead by example talk about your club, Area, Division and District Speech contests. Announce it at every meeting.

Do you have fliers for your club contests. Do you know when your Area Contest will be held. Make plans to attend all your contests. Invite all your family and friends to the contests. Have fun.

The more you support each other the more members you will attract. Members want to know that you are aware of them let them know how important they are to you.

Invite other clubs to be the judges at your contests. The more you interact with members of other clubs the more the word of Toastmasters will get around. Your community need to know about you.

Make the change; build it and they will come.

Hello District 15 Toastmasters,
Or I should say, Merry Christmas, Happy Channuka, Happy Kwanza and Festivus, the holiday for the rest of us! Regardless of your choice of Winter-Solstice holidays, a common theme is the desire to re-connect with family and friends. Celebrate any or all of the opportunities to tell those near you, in one way or another, I'm glad we enjoyed another year together. Your will companionship brighten the coming year as well. I will summarize for the District 15 Leadership Team in saying, Happy Holidays!

The Winter 2009 Pulsebeat has been released. You may access the Pulsebeat at the link, http://pulsebeat.district15speaks.org/.

As a friendly holiday reminder, the TLI (Toastmaster Leadership Institute) sessions are coming soon to a location near you. All club officers are expected to attend a TLI in January, and all toastmasters are welcome to participate as well. If you have never met the toastmasters from another club, this is a great opportunity to network.

Have you ever thought about advancing in Toastmasters leadership? Fortunately, Toastmasters International is eager to train you for such leadership opportunities. Nominations for the 2010-2011 District Leadership Team are open through the link http://officers.district15speaks.org/nominations.php. The nominations will remain open until March 15, 2010.

Let me finish this month's mailing by thanking every one of you District 15 Members. Although we have only finished half the Toastmaster's year, it has been a remarkable year, worthy of great celebrations. In July, I said that the District Leadership team is committed to helping our members succeed, and every week we see the growing success of our clubs as well as our members. And if you feel the district needs to do more to help your club succeed, by all means talk to your Area Governor and let us know what we're missing.

Thank you, District 15!

Hello District 15 Toastmasters,
In this month's mailing, we discuss with you the October 2009 state of the District, celebrate accomplishments and extend our invitation for you to join us at the Fall 2009 Conference.

State of District 15
Four months into the current year, our club membership is just under our goal at 40% of the year's target. Our active club count is at 83, with 7 remaining clubs that have not yet renewed their dues for the October period. So what you may ask, but the impact is that reduced membership has a direct impact on all clubs by forcing a reduction in service However, let me be clear in stating that our active membership is indeed very active. The District 15 membership continues to encourage us at all levels from club to World Headquarters with active educational accomplishments. In the last four months, you have accomplished 55 Competent Communicators, 16 Advanced Communicators, 22 Competent and Advanced Leadership Awards, and 5 Distinguished Toastmasters. Wow! Fantastic work to all of you and especially to the clubs that helped these toastmasters achieve great success.

Of our 90 clubs, we have 45 with 12 or fewer members. It's no secret that sustaining membership can be a challenge for many clubs. We in district leadership want to help your clubs to grow, but we also need your participation. I would like to propose an experiment in club growth strategies, but it means gaining commitment from club members to assist. We will divide participating clubs into two groups, apply different growth strategies to each group, and compare the results over a four month period. At the end of the experiment we hope to learn much about how clubs can gain new members while retaining their existing rosters. The results will be shared at the Spring 2010 Conference and recognition given to participating clubs. To participate, send an email to clubgrowth@district15speaks.org , subject line We want to play too and tell us your name and which club you represent. Only clubs with 12 or fewer members as of November 1 may play, and the district will provide
marketing materials to participating clubs at no expense to the club. Incidentally, for you go-getters in the district, this counts in your Competent Leadership manual in Project 6, 8 or 10.

Celebrations
Dave Manning, Boise Club achieved Distinguished Toastmaster

Area A1 Governor Annette Manning has completed all club visits
Area B1 Governor Greg Harness has completed all club visits
Area B2 Governor Jerry Allen has completed all club visits

Congratulations to Division D for our newest addition American Express Club chartered October 27, 2009. Great job to everyone involved.

Fall 2009 Conference
Fall Conference is just around the corner. It is November 13-14 at the Red Lion Hotel in Salt Lake City and there is still time to register. The Conference Committee has been working hard to plan some great activities for you. You may register online at http://conference.district15speaks.org.

We will kick off Friday night with an evening of magic and music. Brad Barton is a well known magician who will make you laugh and will make you think. Following Brad's presentation we will have a 70's themed disco party and karaoke. Costumes are encouraged but not required.

Saturday will be a full day of education sessions. We are privileged to have two excellent keynote speakers for the Saturday session. In the morning we will have the opportunity to have David Blanchard share with us The Six Qualities of an Intentional Creator. At lunch Sheryl Roush DTM, will provide us with information on how we can Sparkle When We Speak. Sheryl will also present an educational session Saturday afternoon and a special session on Sunday morning. In addition, we will hear presentations from our own District 15 Toastmasters Gayle Gray, Rick Chromey, Don Newton, Bill Ruesch, Dennis Sanok, and Clay Neves. We will also recognize our clubs throughout District 15 with a parade of club banners on Saturday morning and will recognize the accomplishments of our members and clubs throughout the day. Club representatives are reminded to bring their club banners.

Of course we couldn't have a Toastmasters conference without Speech Contests. Our District 15 Evaluation Contest will be Saturday immediately following lunch. The five funniest people in District 15 will compete in the District Humorous Speech Contest Saturday evening following the banquet. As we know, all speakers need an audience so plan to come and cheer these folks on.

During the day on Saturday we will also have a silent auction of baskets donated by the clubs. This always proves to be an interesting event because we get to see the creativity displayed by the clubs in District 15. Who knowsyou may even be able to do some early holiday shopping!

We have had some questions asked about the dress code for the conference. Friday night will be casual or in costume. Saturday during the day is business casual and Saturday evening best dress or black tie. Please come and enjoy the conference and enjoy meeting your fellow Toastmasters from District 15.

Closing
It has been a great initial 4 months serving as your district governor, and I am looking forward to 8 more great months as well. Serving you has been and continues to be a tremendous honor, and together, we will continue to build success, one member at a time.

Greetings Fellow Toastmasters of District 15,
From the desk of the District Governor:
As we transition into the autumn, the excitement of the new Toastmaster's year continues to build. There are considerable efforts to bring about the best District 15 Conference possible. Keynote speakers will include Sheryl Roush and David Blanchard, along with fantastic speech contests lined up for November 13 and 14 in Salt Lake City. The Full Conference Package is still held down to $109 and you can register online at http://conference/district15speaks.org. As an added incentive, we will give a complete set of Advanced Communication Manuals to a club represented by attendees at the conference. You can learn more at http://conference.district15speaks.org/incentive.php. I look forward to seeing you there.

Our theme this year is Building Leadership, One Success at a Time. The number one goal for the District 15 leadership team is to help each one of our members to succeed. By helping you succeed, we become better leaders capable of helping even more people to become successful leaders. Share with us your ideas of how we in District 15 can help you to succeed by sending your suggestion to dg@district15speaks.org.

Dave Manning, DTM
District Governor

From the desk of the Lt. Governor of Education and Training:
District 15 is looking for presenters for the Fall Conference to be held November 13-14 at the Red Lion Hotel, Salt Lake City, Utah. Any District 15 Toastmasters is eligible to present including Area and Division Governors and club officers. The only exception are those individuals who are competing in the Humorous Speech and Evaluation Contests.

District Governor Dave Manning's theme is Building Leadership, One Success at a Time. The Conference Theme is Celebrate Leadership. We are looking for presentations which would fall into one of three tracks: Communication, Leadership, or Personal/Professional Growth. The focus of these presentations should be to benefit the members and clubs of District 15. Toastmasters International has a number of modules you can select from or you can develop your own presentation. The sessions will be 45 minutes in length.

The presenter application form can be obtained from Dave Garbrecht at garbrechtd@yahoo.com or from Peggy Carr at rwmjgypsi2@aol.com. The application form must be returned no later than October 1 with your proposal. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us. We will be happy to assist you in any way possible.

Peggy Carr, DTM
Lt. Governor of Education and Training

From the desk of the Lt. Governor of Marketing:
The time for payment of club dues is fast approaching. Now would be the time to Talk up Toastmasters. Why Talk up Toastmasters? This is when the proof is in the pudding. How many members in your clubs will renew? Make it a goal to have every member renew their dues. Help your members want to renew their membership; give them a reason to stay in Toastmasters. Dues are due Oct 1st.If you wait until the last minute to submit them, you may miss the deadline. As soon as six members have paid their dues, send them to TI.

It has also come to our attention there are several clubs who have not sent in their officers lists. This is a very important step; we cannot communicate with your club without the correct information. It is also one of the goals for your DCP. It is important that the District as well as TI have the correct information for your clubs.

Hello District 15 Toastmasters,
July 1 marked the start of a new Toastmasters year, and with it, changes in leadership. With this annual changing of the guard, we take a moment to recognize the accomplishments of those who have gone before us while we commit to our tasks ahead.

Our District 15 theme this year is, Building Leadership, One Success at a Time. Through service to one another, we grow our leadership skills with every success. Even more effective in honing our leadership are the opportunities to help another enjoy success. Fellow club members will benefit from your assistance, just as every future toastmaster will benefit from your leadership. As members of District 15, you are the leadership that we need.

The district has also added new Web Conferencing capabilities to assist in training, business meetings, and communications in the district. As part of this service, there is a regular, open discussion with the District Governor on Monday evenings at 9:00 PM. You may link to the District Chat from the Members page of the District 15 Website at http://members.district15speaks.org/. I look forward to seeing you there.

--Dave Manning, DTM
District 15 Governor
dg@district15speaks.org

From the Office of the LGET:
In order to be recognized as Distinguished, clubs should meet certain education goals, as well as membership and administrative goals. The education goals are 2 CC's, 2 more CC's, 1 AC, 1 more AC, 1 Leadership award (CL, AL, or DTM) and 1 more Leadership award. Clubs often ask the question Why should we be doing thiswhat benefit is it to us as clubs and members. The answer to the question, in my opinion is: When club members are completing their education requirements, they are gaining knowledge and experience that will help them in all facets of life, not just Toastmasters. This is the time of year when club officers and members should be working together to identify what goals are attainable between now and June 30. Completion of the Club Success Plan provides a means for clubs to make these plans and gain commitments from all their members.

From the Office of the LGM:
We have all been encouraged to work on Membership Building. In one of our TI conference calls it was mentioned that membership building contests in clubs is a great way to increase membership. There is adomino effect when we have membership building contests in our clubs. The Smedley Award is a great place to begin. Starting from Aug 1st through September 30th this contest requires 5 new members recruited inclubs. The rewards are endless not only forclubs butAreas, Divisions and ultimately the District. Together we recruit more members bigger clubs more new clubs the rewards are endless. Membership building 101 item 1622 available from TI is a great resource to help membership building inclubs. Providing guests with a guest kitwhich has useful information about your club and the Toastmasters program. This kit could include: A copy of the Toastmasters magazine, a membership application form, Fliers: Confidence, The voice of Leadership, and all about Toastmas
ters. Guests are your future members treat them with sincerity, welcome them with warmth, invite them back. Follow up with them find out how they enjoyed your meeting. Enjoy each member who attends your meetings they will bring their friends ultimately more members. Have fun make Toastmasters a great place to be.
